Small group of papers, mainly re 'Bridge' course to introduce senior public school pupils to industry, 1911-1995.
In addition to the documents listed below, the collection also includes the following examples of manufactured items taken to lectures for 'hands on' examination: envelope of pins from carding machine, packet of colour filters by Illford Ltd, swatches of cloth (some with labels attached).
Ernest Isaac Lewis (1876-1961) read Science at Cambridge and then became a science master, notably at Oundle. He moved to the Methodist College, Belfast, in 1912 as Headmaster, leaving in 1917 to become chief scientific adviser to Albright & Wilson. This was followed by work in metallurgy, including at Mond Nickel and Sandburg Bros. Thereafter he concentrated his efforts on education for management in industry, through the Bridge course which he devised and presented at numerous public schools, commencing with Rugby, Stowe and Berkhamsted. Lewis was the author of text-books on inorganic (1907) and organic chemistry (1909), on 'The making of a chemical' (1927, with George King), and on 'Preparation for business careers. An experiment in school teaching' (1936).
