Documents relating to the Catherall family and their brick manufacturing business in Buckley, Flintshire.
Generations of the Catherall family of Buckley, Flintshire in north Wales were associated with the earthenware and brick manufacturing industry of the area since the eighteenth century (and possibly earlier) when Jonathan Catherall began the business as a small concern, c. 1737. He died c. 1762 and was succeeded by his son John who was killed in a horse riding accident in 1777. John left a widow Martha (died 1792), who carried on the operation, and children John, Joseph, Ann and youngest son Jonathan Catherall (1761-1833) who became his mother's business partner. Jonathan, a devout Nonconformist convert, married Catherine Jones (d. 1807), daughter of Reverend William Jones, vicar of Llannor and Deneio, c. 1792. They had three children, Martha (1794-1818), Frances (1795-1818) and William (born 1798), who took over the family business and like his father was a prominent member of the Buckley Congregational fraternity.
