Records of John Forbes

Scope and Content

Original charts produced for seine net fishing in the sea areas off the north east coast of Scotland (a note by John Forbes states that they cover the area fished by F.R. Cocils, commencing c 1954). These charts are the proto-types developed by John Forbes' Admiralty team, from which 100s of copies were produced for local fishermen throughout the 1960s and 1970s. On the east coast, most of these charts are purple, north and south; green, east and west; and areas roughly 15 miles by 15 miles. The collection also includes shoal catchment area charts for the Moray Firth, Kinnairds and Shetland, n.d.; a plan of G.S. seine net trawler, 1963; and field notebooks containing measurements ? from which the charts were compiled.

Administrative / Biographical History

From c 1947 - 1954 John Forbes was involved with mine-sweeping and mine-clearance for the Admiralty. In Dec 1954 he was appointed civilian master with its survey and research team, and in this role produced detailed, early survey charts of the sea-bed and fishing grounds off the north east coast of Scotland. The charts produced in the course of his work played a significant role in the development of seine net fishing in north east Scotland in the late 1950s, and continued in use until the 1970s, when they became superseded by the more sophisticated Decca-plotter.
