Dr Frederick Storrie graduated from the University of Glasgow BSc in 1923 and obtaining his PhD from the University in 1931. He was a leading figure in the Young Men's Christian Association in Scotland.

Storrie was born on 19 December 1900 in Paisley, the son of William, a commission agent. Storrie was educated at the John Neilson Institute and Allan Glen’s School, Glasgow. He first matriculated at the university in 1918, aged 17, to study for a science degree. Storrie was extremely academically able, winning a first class certificate in Medical Physics in his second year and two prizes in Chemistry in his third year. After choosing Chemistry as his principle subject in his final year, Storrie won first class certificates in both Advanced Inorganic Chemistry and Physical Chemistry. He graduated on 17 November, 1923. After graduating, Storrie lectured within the chemistry department until his retirement in 1966.

During his time at university Storrie began his involvement with the YMCA. He first enrolled in 1920 and twice served as president of the Paisley association. He also held the position of Scottish honorary vice-president and served as both chairman and vice-chairman of the YMCA national council. He was very active within the church, which led him to become an elder of St Andrew's Church of Scotland (now the Laigh Kirk) in 1948. Storrie also served for a time on the Scottish Churches Council. In addition to this, Storrie had a passion for museums chaired the Council for Museums and Galleries in Scotland for six years. His service to the YMCA and musuems earned him an OBE in 1971.
