Stanley Middleton was born in Bulwell, Nottinghamshire on 1 August 1919, the third and final sonof Thomas and Elizabeth Middleton. His father was a railway worker. Stanley was educated at HighPavement School, Bulwell and University College Nottingham where he studied English and French.After the second world war, Middleton returned to High Pavement School as a teacher, becoming headof the English Department in 1958.
Middleton began writing while at University College Nottingham and contributed a short story tothe student magazine, Gong. While a teacher in Bulwell, he worked on novels in his leisuretime and in 1958, Hutchinson published A Short Answer. A further 36 of his novels werepublished up to 1999. Middleton was co-winner of the Booker Prize in 1974 with Holiday.
