British Sailing Ship Owners' Association Ltd

Scope and Content

The archive consists of two sub-series, both relating to the annual and general meetings of the Association: minute books, 1918-1980; and transcriptions of speeches made at these meetings, 1930-1944 and 1963.

Administrative / Biographical History

The British Sailing Ship Owners' Association Ltd was founded in 1919, after the merger of the Coasting Sailing Ship Owners' Association, and the British Sailing Ship Owners' Federation. Its committee was made up of representatives from those Protection and Indemnity Clubs covering the insurance of deep sea, and home and coasting sailing ships, each club nominating two members.

The Association, whose name changed to the British Motor and Sailing Ship Owners' Association Ltd. in 1933, met at the Chamber of Shipping. Its primary function was to promote the use of sailing ships against steamers, and to ensure that fair and equitable business conditions were established.
