Edward Roberts (Jolly Fox) Papers

Scope and Content

Chronicles of the Times i.e. diaries, 1877 - 1926, which include brief notes on events in Dolwyddelan as well as details of journeys made, home and abroad. Edward Roberts records such events as visits to the 1910 National Eisteddfod, the investiture in Caernarfon of George V in 1910, and a trip to America during the First World War. The later chronicles appear to concentrate in detail on politics and wars, whilst in several cases, lists of deaths in the locality are included.

A series of essays by Jolly Fox in Y Drych, as well as other essays and collections of epitaphs.

Miscellaneous papers such as an abstract of title of the Earl of Ancaster to freehold hereditaments in Dolwyddelan parish and a Purchaser's Requisition on Title of a lot in the Gwydyr Sale in 1894 relating to Brynhyfryd in Dolwyddelan.

Administrative / Biographical History

Edward Cadwallon Roberts of Brynhyfryd, Dolwyddelan, Caernarfonshire was a literary man who took great interest in Dolwyddelan and its history. He appears to have travelled extensively, to America in particular, and he served Dolwyddelan and Betws-y-coed on the County Council as a Liberal. He wrote articles under the pseudonym, Jolly Fox and died in 1926, aged 71.
