Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The 'Amalric' was a cargo ship owned by Shaw Savill whose British and Somali crew staged a strike in October-November 1975 against poor pay and conditions, in particular low safety standards. They attracted rank and file support but British and New Zealand trade union officials were accused of betraying them. J M Savage was president of the New Zealand Cooks' and Stewards' Union, 1974-1982.
