Bartolome Cairasco de Figueroa: Esdruxulea

'Esdruxulea de varios elogios y canciones en alabanca de Christo nuestro senor y de la sacratissima Virgen su madre de algunos sanctos y diversos sujetes', a collection of poems dated Canaria, 7 May 1611. The volume was prepared for the press by Captain Francisco de Betancor. In his dedication to the Cardinal-Archbishop of Toledo, Betancor records that the poems were composed in the last days of Cairasco's life. There are seventy-four pieces by Cairasco, as well as Latin and Spanish poems on his death. One of the poems describes the successful defence of the Canary Isles against the English fleet commanded by Francis Drake, 6 October 1595. There is a table of contents at the front of the volume.

The volume was bought by Sir Thomas Phillipps from the bookseller Thomas Thorpe, and became Phillipps MS 7250 in his library. Purchased by the Library at Sotheby's, 16 June 1970.
