John Ellys: Accounts, some concerning Sturbridge Fair [Stourbridge Fair]

Scope and Content

The accounts in the main sequence mostly concern rents for various properties and disbursements, entered on the leaves of what had been intended as a collection of 'Sententiae & variis autoribus de promptae'. Some of the 'sententiae' appear in a second hand at, for example, pp. 17 and 18. An alphabetical index to F. Burgersdicius, Institutiones Logicae runs from the other end of the book, in the second hand. In this section, at pp. 2-11 and 45, which had been left partly blank, Ellys enters further accounts from 1697-8, some re Sturbridge Fair. These include the following signatures for receipts: (p. 4) William Marsh, 28 Sep. 1697; (p. 7) John Bates, 23 Oct. 1697; (p. 7) John Fowkes, 26 Oct. 1697; (p. 7) Peter Bates, 26 Oct. and 8 Nov. 1697, and (p. 10) 13 Sep. 1698; (p. 9) Thomas Maning, 29 June 1698, and (p. 10) 15 Apr. 1699; (p. 11) Abraham Silk, 19 Oct. 1698.
