Administrative / Biographical History

Frederick Karl Butler, OBE (1958), was born in 1904 and educated at Elstree School; Haileybury College; and Trinity College, Oxford. His career in education in Africa began in 1927 when he was appointed as an education officer in Nigeria; he became senior education officer in 1938. After military service (1939-1943), Butler returned to his work in education, subsequently holding the posts of chief inspector of education (1950), deputy director of education (1950), and director of education in the western region (1954-1958).
