Records of the Cardigan Poor Law Union, 1840-1948, including minute books, 1927-1948; letter books, 1932-1935; inventory books, ledgers and accounts, 1901-1932; and photographs and miscellaneous papers, 1840-1937.

Administrative / Biographical History

Cardigan Poor Law Union was formed in 1837 and its operation was overseen by an elected Board of Guardians representing its 26 constituent parishes, in Cardiganshire and Pembrokeshire. Under the Poor Law Amendment Act 1834, parishes formed unions; each union supported a workhouse, that for the Cardigan Union being built at St Dogmaels, near Cardigan. The Poor Law Unions were administered by Boards of Guardians and (latterly) After the Local Government Act 1929, the union was abolished and its duties transferred to the Guardians Committee of the Public Assistance Committee of Carmarthenshire County Council (later Welfare Committee).
