Edward Morris Bernstein 1904 - 1996
Edward Bernstein was educated at the University of Chicago, where he readeconomics but also took courses in anthropology and sociology. He obtained ascholarship to Harvard and started his academic career as an AssociateProfessor at a North Carolina University, later becoming a full professor atanother North Carolina University.
In 1940 Bernstein left academic life to take up a post at the US Treasury. Here hebecame assistant director of monetary research. He also took a large part inthe preparation of the American plan that was adopted in preference toKeynes' proposal for a Clearing Union and was both technical adviser andexecutive secretary of the US delegation at the Bretton Woods conference.
After the war Bernstein became Director of Research at the International MonetaryFund (IMF) and stayed there until 1958. He was responsible for puttingforward the ideas that became the General Arrangement to Borrow and theintroduction of reserve assets which became SDR's. On retiring from the IMF hefounded a company which issued two research reports on a monthly basis and a regularletter on economic developments in the United States.
