Administrative / Biographical History

This private bank was formed in the 1770s by Charles Cox, a packet boat agent. After many name changes, the business became Cox, Cobbold & Co. in 1839; it was otherwise known as the Harwich Bank. From 1812 a link existed with Bridges & Co. (est. c.1810) of Hadleigh and Manningtree. For many years the bank shared partners with Bacon, Cobbold & Co. (est. 1786) of Ipswich, which acquired the business in 1893.
