Administrative / Biographical History

Herbert Rhodes (1845-1879) managed a cotton plantation in Natal, c1870, at firstalone, then with his brother Cecil. Shortly afterwards, the discovery ofdiamonds at Kimberley, Griqualand West, north of Cape Colony, led the brothersto abandon their interest in cotton and take up prospecting instead. However,Herbert had already developed an active interest in pioneering, and in 1871 hegave over his part in the claim to Cecil. He was eventually killed in a shootingaccident whilst pioneering in the Lake Nyasa area.
