Herbert Rhodes (1845-1879) managed a cotton plantation in Natal, c1870, at firstalone, then with his brother Cecil. Shortly afterwards, the discovery ofdiamonds at Kimberley, Griqualand West, north of Cape Colony, led the brothersto abandon their interest in cotton and take up prospecting instead.
