Records including executive council minutes, ledgers of branch income and expenditure, central cash books, members' contribution books, society journal and publications of other organisations.

Administrative / Biographical History

In 1873 nine local clubs in the Midlands and North united to form a federation and in 1882 the society was reconstituted on amalgamated principles and took the name Amalgamated Slaters of England Provident Society, becoming the Amalgamated Slaters' and Tilers' Provident Society of England and Ireland (ASTPS) in 1886. In 1946 the society changed its name to the Amalgamated Slaters', Tilers' and Roofing Operatives' Society (ASTRO). In 1969 it transferred engagements to the Amalgamated Union of Building Trade Workers (AUBTW).

Custodial History

The Amalgamated Slaters', Tilers' and Roofing Operatives' Society's papers form part of the Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians' (UCATT) archive. The initial deposit was made in 1974 and accruals are listed under the entry for the Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians (MSS.78/UC). A further deposit of Amalgamated Slaters', Tilers' and Roofing Operatives' Society material, known as the Poupard Papers, was made by unaccompanied van on the 1st October 1980. Additional material was transferred from the University library in 2004.
