Patricia Latham was born on 29 March 1935 in West Bridgford. Her family was reasonably wealthy with her grandfather owning one of the first motor cars in Nottingham. She spent much of her childhood living with aunts and uncles who paid for her to be educated at The Mount Girls School, York alongside Dame Judi Dench and Susan Drabble (who wrote under the pen name of A.S. Byatt). Latham remained friends with Drabble and would often visit her family and her sister, the author Margaret Drabble.
She began her nursing training in 1953 at the General Hospital in Nottingham and met her husband in 1955. Her daughter was born in 1957 when she was forced to give up her work as a nurse due to the effects of morning sickness.
When her daughter was older she recommenced nursing as Sister in Charge at Southwell Surgery, where she worked for around 20 years.
