George Bain held the following posts: research Fellow in industrial relations, Nuffield College Oxford, 1966-9; Professor of industrial relations, UMIST, 1969-70; deputy director and director, SSRC Industrial Relations Research Unit, University of Warwick, 1974-81; Professor of industrial relations, University of Warwick, 1979-89; Principal, London Business School, 1989-97; Vice-Chancellor, Queen's University Belfast, 1998-2004.

Custodial History

Items with references beginning MSS.65 were deposited in the Centre from 1974 to 1991 and in 2011 (MSS.65/352). Items with references beginning 957 were jointly deposited by Sir George and Jeremy Waddington in 2013.

Sir George's papers from his term as vice-chancellor of Queen's University, Belfast, are in the University Archives. He also deposited the records of the Conference of University Management Schools, of which he served as chairman.
