Administrative / Biographical History
The National Union of Glovers and Leatherworkers (NUGLW) was formed in 1920 after the amalgamation of the Amalgamated Society of Glovers and the United Glovers Mutual Aid Society. Initially, the newly formed union was known only as the National Union of Glovers. Only in 1954 was the suffix added. The contents of the NUGLW archive reveal that the union was very much based in Yeovil and the surrounding districts. In 1971, the union combined with the National Union of Boot and Shoe Operatives, the Amalgamated Society of Leather Workers and the National Union of Leather Workers and Allied Trades to form a new union. The result of the merger was known as the National Union of Footwear, Leather and Allied Trades (NUFLAT).
