Administrative / Biographical History
The Stewarts were a family of solicitors based in Wakefield , Chester and York. Martin Stewart was born 20 August 1852 in Wakefield to William Stewart, solicitor, and his wife Anne. By the time of the1881 census Martin had followed his father into the legal profession; he is recorded as a solicitor living with his brother William, another solicitor and a Justice of the Peace, at Milnthorpe House in Sandal Magna.
Martin married Bertha Wigglesworth at Wakefield the following year and their son Douglas Martin Stewart was born there in 1885. By 1891 the family was living in Chester at Edgar House and Martin had retired.
His son Douglas Martin Stewart was educated at Shrewsbury School and then at Cambridge, graduating BA in 1907. In the 1911 census 25 year old Douglas is described as a solicitor’s articled clerk and is living in York.
