Papers of Marjorie Eugene Alexander, mainly consisting of diaries. Also found with the collection were three photographs, including two portraits of Marjorie Alexander by the photographer Angus McBean, see MS. Photogr. c. 128, fols. 89-91, and a box of ten medals awarded as music prizes when she was still in New Zealand, 1929-31, see Janitor's List of Library Portraits and Objects 748.

Administrative / Biographical History
Marjorie Eugene Alexander (b 1913) was a New Zealand pianist who won an Associated Board Scholarship in 1931 which enabled her to study at the Royal College of Music in London. She remained at the college for five years and won numerous awards including a Leverhulme Exhibition. Alexander also began broadcasting in the Overseas Service of the BBC whilst still studying at the Royal College of Music. She made her London debut at Wigmore Hall in 1944 and continued to tour England. She married Cyril Cooke in 1956? and taught the piano.

The papers were given to the Library by Dr. Catherine Finer with a letter of authority from Cyril Cooke, Marjorie Alexander's husband, in 1998.
