Grenade course notebook

Scope and Content

Volume containing manuscript notes and diagrams made by Lance Corporal R. Lambert while studying on a training course at the Grenade School in Otley, Yorkshire.

Topics covered include explanations of types of explosives, detonators and fuses; exercises in trench clearing, including how to bomb different types of trenches; and descriptions of grenades in use by the British and Germans; descriptions of gas attacks and methods of defence against attack; and a list of safety precautions. In addition to the manuscript notes, there are both hand drawn diagrams and sketches and, for some of the grenades, printed diagrams.

This volume is a rare surviving record of military training during the First World War.
