Scope and Content

As further security on a debt of #1,100 owed to William Garfit Ashton of Cambridge, gent (3rd party), Elizabeth Ayres of Cambridge, widow of the late John Ayres (1st party), assigns to him freehold property in Northampton St, parish of St Peter, Cambridge, and further undertakes to surrender copyhold land in the manor of Madingley, parish of St Giles, Cambridge, in trust, to pay off the debt if she defaults on payment of principal sum and interest. James Spear of 39 Gloucester Road, Hyde Park Gardens, is included as a second party to the indenture as heir to another of Ayres' creditors, the late John Spear (co-trustee with Ashton under the marriage settlement for Cyrus and Anne Jay (nee Spear)). 3 pages, tripartite indenture, signed and sealed by Ayres and Ashton, witnessed by Ashton's clerks James Jarrold and Charles K Apthorpe, duty stamps. Endorsed: '5', and in blue crayon: 'Cambridge'. Parchment supplied by C or G Gibbs of 23 Princes St, Blackfriars Road, engraving by W Warrington of The Strand.
