Records of the Melton Mowbray Electric Light Company, 1899-1948

Scope and Content

The minute books are all signed. There are four directors' minute books covering 1899-1948 (BEM1). They record in detail financial, share holding and significant operational aspects of thecompany as well as lists of customers and cheques of payment received. The collection also containsa minute book of general (shareholders) meetings from 1900-1948 (BEM 2). Newspaper cuttings relatingto the company have been pasted inside it.

Administrative / Biographical History

The surviving minutes for the Melton Mowbray Electric Light Company begin on 15 September 1899,by which time the company was already registered. At the beginning of the following year, it wasresolved to construct an electricity generating station on land at the north side of Mill Street.The company supplied electricity for street lighting, and for domestic and commercial premises inMelton Mowbray, Leicestershire and its immediate surrounding area. The company was nationalised withthe rest of the electric power industry in 1948 and its activities were taken over by the EastMidlands Electricity Board.

Custodial History

The fate of the bulk of the company's archive is not known. The present collection contains onlyminute books, presumably retained by the East Midlands Electricity Board, and was given to TheUniversity of Nottingham's Department of Manuscripts and Special Collections in April 2000 byPowerGen.
