Administrative / Biographical History

The Africa Educational Trust was set up in 1958 by Michael Scott, director of theAfrica Bureau, to support education in Africa, African students studying outsideAfrica, and research and dissemination of information about Africa. For manyyears the main focus of its work was the provision of study grants andscholarships for South Africans and Namibians who had suffered from apartheid.During the late 1980s and early 1990s it also supported a programme of grantsand scholarships for African refugees in Britain. Subsequently however, it devoted agreater proportion of its efforts to supporting education in Africa, itsmain beneficiaries being girls and young women without access to education,children in schools in areas of conflict, young ex-militia men without educationor vocational training, and young men and women working with local organisations, etc.in conflict situations.
