Letters home from Girton 1918-19. The subject matter includes: first impressions of College, the food, her room in Top Chapel, the 'Little-go' examination', Girton traditions such as 'Jug' and 'Propping', people such as Miss Jex-Blake, Miss Cave-Brown-Cave, Miss Allen and Eileen Power (including a post-lecture row between her and Mr Currie MP), societies and sport (Fire Brigade, History Club, Hockey etc), dances and concerts, lectures and study. In addition there is a long letter describing the Armistice celebrations, November 1918. There are 15 letters which have been given consecutive pagination [probably by WG].

Administrative / Biographical History
Winifred Gaukroger (nee Trenholme) was educated at Thorseby Hall School, Leeds and came up to Girton to read History as a Russell Gurney Scholar 1918-21. She took a Leeds University Teaching Diploma in 1922 and taught History at Halifax High School until her marriage to [John] Leslie Gaukroger in 1926. After her marriage she devoted her time to raising four children: two daughters and two sons.
