Illustrated as an emblem book with ninety-nine contemporary engravings of Biblical scenes, real and fabulous animals and birds, etc., pasted in (some repeated often), beginning on verso of first pastedown. F.21r bears a list of "Books writt by WT: Gent". Certain "Contemplations" are dated, 1699-1702. Signature of Judith Weston, ca.1720, by poem title on f.1r; bookplate of John T. Beer, ca.1850. Bound in contemporary blind-tooled calf with remains of metal clasps and rebacked, with spine label CONTEMPLATIONS WITH EMBLEMS

Administrative / Biographical History
William Tipping, 1598-1649, was the younger son of Sir George Tipping of Wheatfield and Draycott, Oxfordshire. He was educated at Queen's College, Oxford (B.A., 1617) and then, in 1618, became a student at Lincoln's Inn, before giving up the law and returning to Oxfordshire. He joined the Parliamentary cause and took the covenant. From 1640 he was the incumbent of the living at Shabbington in Oxfordshire, which was in the gift of the Tipping family
