United Road Transport Union

The United Road Transport Union was founded in 1890 as the United Carters' Association. A year later the union, which was based in Manchester, changed its name to the United Carters' Association of England. By 1910 it comprised nearly three thousand members divided into fifty-six branches. Two years later the title of the union altered again to the United Carters' and Motormen's Association of England. The National Motor Drivers' Association merged with the union and shortly afterwards in 1926 the union became the United Road Transport Workers' Association of England. The union was renamed the United Road Transport Union in 1964. The union had over fifteen thousand members in 1998, the vast majority being male.
