Scope and Content

The collection includes numerous papers relating to the Victorian church architects Henry Woodyer (1816-1896) and Frederick Preedy (1820-1898), Victorian stained glass artists and a number of Victorian architects.

It also includes an extensive collection of papers, newspaper cuttings, photographs and plans relating to churches in the London area.

Administrative / Biographical History

Gordon Lansdown Barnes (c1917-1985) was an ecclesiologist, a local historian and an architectural photographer with national reputation. Much of his photographic work can be found in the National Monuments Record (Historic England Archive).

His published works include Stepney Churches (1967), and Frederick Preedy, Architect and Glass-Painter 1820-1898 (1984). He also worked with Canon Basil Clarke on 'Demolished and Desecrated Churches of London'. He was Secretary to the Worcester Diocesan Advisory Committee from 1979. His collections of books and MSS were bequeathed to the Council for the Care of Churches and his photographs to the National Monuments Record.
