The archive consists of the papers of Professor Haley relating to his work on the Editorial Committee of 'Operational Research Quarterly', the magazine of the Operational Research Society, 1961-1977. The papers include agendas, minutes, reports and correspondence of the committee

Administrative / Biographical History

Having read maths at Birmingham University in the 1950s, Haley was a research assistant in the Department of Engineering Production at the University 1953-7. He was part of the National Coal Board's Operational Research Group 1957-9. From 1959, he has taught at Birmingham University, becoming the countrys first formal lecturer in operational research. In 1968, he became Professor of Operational Research, and is currently based at the School of Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering, University of Birmingham. He became an associate member of the Operational Research Society (ORS) in 1954; helping to found the Midlands Operational Research Group in 1959. He was the editor of 'International Abstracts in Operations Research' in 1960, serving on the ORS Publications Committee 1960-80. He also spent four years on the ORS Council and was editor of the 'Journal of the Operational Research Society'.

This collection forms part of the Operational Research and Operational Research Society Archive which was deposited with the Centre by operational research practitioners.

The archive was deposited with the Modern Records Centre in December 1997 by the Operational Research Society. It forms part of the Operational Research Archive in response to a request from the Archives Committee of the Operational Research Society.
