Illuminated heraldic pedigree of the family of Umfreville.
Tracing descent from 1066 down to the children of Edward Rowland Pickering, completed 16 May 1849. A list of variant spellings of the name Umfreville is given, and other marginal annotations.
Inscribed: 'I do certifie this to be a true draught from the Castle of Elsden in Northumberland'. Subscribed W. Horsley. 'Dated May 2nd 1712. It probably is for Robt. Umfreville, E of Angos. No coronets being then used, etc. ...S Seagar.'
The family name of Umfreville was derived from a placename in La Manche in France. The family held lands in Northumberland, claiming the earldom of Angus through the marriage of Sir Gilbert Umfreville to the countess of Angus in 1296. Robert and Gilbert, third and fourth earls, fought for the English side in the wars against the Scots but when Gilbert died without heirs in 1381, the earldom was granted by Robert the Bruce to the Stewarts of Boncle. The family tree traces the Umfreville line from 1066; it was compiled in 1715, with additions down to 1849.
