James Hutchison Cockburn slide collection

Scope and Content

Collection of twenty glass negatives, twenty-one small photographs and six colour slides, numbered with Roman Numerals, mostly of people in Africa. A handwritten note by James Cockburn accompanying the collection identifies images I, II, III, and IV as taken by himself, and V, VI, VII and VIII as given to him. The note continues: 'I have just discovered these plates. I have marked the eight which I can identify (some with a question mark). Most of the plates were presented to me when in Africa in 1916/1917.'

Administrative / Biographical History

The Rev'd James Hutchison Cockburn was born in 29 October 1882 and died 20 June 1973. He was a chaplain in World War I in German East Africa, British East Africa, Uganda and Zanzibar.

Good to fair condition, one glass slide has shattered and some attempt to repair it with tape has been made.
