Low Pay Commission

Scope and Content

The archive contains photocopies of written evidence submitted to the Commission in 1997-8. It only includes the evidence of those organisations and individuals who consented to publication of their evidence.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Low Pay Commission was appointed in July 1997 to recommend the level at which the National Minimum Wage should be introduced. Its 'First Report, The National Minimum Wage', Cm 3976, was issued in June 1998. As well as undertaking consultation and research, it received nearly 500 written submissions. Those submissions are listed in Appendix 1 of the First Report. Most of the contributors were prepared to see their submissions made public. It is those submissions that are included in this deposit.
