Administrative / Biographical History

The National Confederated Associations of Power Loom Overlookers (or National Confederation of Power Loom Overlookers) was formed in Manchester in 1875 "to create funds not only for provident benefits but also for defensive and progressive purposes such as obtaining better wages and improved conditions". Its committee called a meeting of district associations in May 1885 at which the General Union of Associations of Loom Overlookers was formed. By 1895 this body had 22 constituent associations, mainly in Lancashire, and the peak of its membership was 8,820 in 1933.
