Coastal Tramp Shipowners' Mutual Association Ltd

Scope and Content

The archive consists of one series, containing two volumes of minutes. These cover the period 1942-1953.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Coastal Tramp Shipowners' Mutual Association Ltd. was founded in 1943, in response to the government's need for shipping during war-time. Rather than a general requisition policy, the Association was set up to regulate the tramp industry, and to act as a negotiator between the government and shipowners. The association dealt with compensation claims for inefficiency, overtime and tonnage by the shipowners, and held its regular meetings at the Chamber of Shipping. In 1953 the Association was discontinued in practice, but the name remained to deal with any future developments in the tramp shipping industry.
