Samuel Bentham: Notebook

Scope and Content

Notebook of Samuel Bentham, 124 folios. Fos 1-49 consist chiefly of receipts, valuations and estimates of the vicarage dues of Witchford, the list of those who paid dues having been tabulated, apparently in anticipation, as far as the year 1731. The figures for the years 1724-1731 have been filled in by another hand after S. Bentham's death. Fos 54-117 consist chiefly of extracts from the records of Ely Cathedral and from the proceedings of the Dean and Chapter, including copies of a letter dated 14 June 1681 from the Dean and Chapter to Lady Ricard (fo. 111v) with regard to a legacy left to the church by Dean Caesar, and of a letter from Sir Charles Caesar to John Spencer, D.D., Master of Corpus Christi College and Dean of Ely, dated 26 Mar. 1678, relating to the same matter (fo. 112v). At the beginning is a printed almanack for the year 1719 (fos 2 and 3). There are several blank leaves.
