Administrative / Biographical History

The Miners' Federation of Great Britain (MFGB) was formed in 1880 as a federation of a number of local miners' associations. It was renamed the Mineworkers' Federation of Great Britain in 1932. In January 1945 it reorganised as a unified trade union, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), with each former constituent association becoming a district of the new union.

Acquisition Information

Most of the items comprising MSS.429 were given to the Centre by Warwickshire County Record Office on 16 July 2001, and some of them were transferred from Warwick University Library. Accession 822 was transferred from Staffordshire Record Office in October 2011 having been deposited there in 2001.

Custodial History

Some items comprising MSS.429 bear the stamp of the Board of Trade Labour Department or the name of W Johnson, Member of Parliament. Some items in accession 822 bear the stamp of the Cannock Chase and Pelsall District of the NUM.
