Scope and Content

In accordance with the will of the late John Hesewell of Cambridge, burgess, John Dyxster of Gyrton [Girton, Cambridgeshire] and his wife Margaret, daughter and heiress of Thomas Taylour, son of Henry Taylour, brother of John Taylour - the said Thomas of late holding the property in trust for Hesewell - convey ['dimisimus tradidimus liberavimus et hac presenti carta nostra confirmavimus'] to Nicholas Worlaye, citizen and goldsmith of London, Thomas Recheford, citizen and grocer, George Harward, citizen and merchant tailor, William Gardnor and Henry Lomnor, citizens and grocers, a tenement with two solars in the parish of St Mary the Virgin next the market place in Cambridge, a tenement of Corpus Christi College to the north and the market cross to the south, heads abutting to the west upon an entrance to the market place and to the east upon a tenement of the Hospital of St John Evangelist, to hold as trustees in acordance with the will of John Hesewell. Deed poll. No signature. Tag and seal wanting. Endorsed with certificate of livery of seisin, witnessed by Hugh Chapman, alderman of Cambridge, John Puregolde and William Nelson of the same, notaries public, Robert Sympson of the same, burgess, John Thirleby of the same, scribe, and by Thomas Marshall of the same, vintner; written and signed by Thirleby. Endorsements of identification. Further endorsed: 'Cant 224', and 'No 16'.

Purchased at Sotheby's, Lot 19 (Phillipps MS 32068), 13 April 1981. Appears to have once belonged to J. Blomefield, author of The History of Norfolk.
