Catalogues of Eggs in Buckley Collection

Scope and Content

  • Catalogue of Collection of Birds' Eggs - specimens are entered as they were collected between 1864 and 1900 (116 pages).
  • Egg-Book, with handwritten entries similar to those in no.1.
  • Catalogue of Birds' Eggs in the Evans and Buckley Collection, with specimens donated to the University Museum of Zoology in 1927 (about 200 pages). Besides eggs collected by Buckley, it incorporated some taken by Alfred Newton and others by Arthur Humble Evans (who donated the collection to the museum).

Administrative / Biographical History

Thomas Edward Buckley (1846-1902) studied arts at the University of Cambridge graduating in 1867 or 1868. He made expeditions to collect birds to Lapland and Sweden (1866-1868), Turkey and Greece (1869), four trips to Africa (1872, 1873, 1876, 1889), to New Brunswick (1882, 1884) and USA (1893). Since 1874 he mainly lived in Scotland.

Manuscripts can be consulted on appointment only. The Museum of Zoology is open Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 17:00 pm. Access and reproduction is at the discretion of the Archivist.
