Records of Aberdeen Medical Club

Scope and Content

Minutes of the Society, Oct 1868 - Feb 1875, containing details of presentations and debates heard at monthly meetings, and including information about particular cases and medical developments taking place in Aberdeen and elsewhere during this period.

Administrative / Biographical History

Aberdeen Medical Club was active between 1868 and 1875, though its date of establishment is not known. Its purpose was to generate friendship, discussion and mutual professional improvement amongst its members, who were drawn mainly from the Medical School at Marischal College. Regular meetings were held at which elected members presented details of interesting or unusual medical conditions, treatments, or case histories for discussion amongst their colleagues. Differences in vital and fundamental doctring led to disharmony amongst members, and in Oct 1868 a decision was taken to dissolve the Club. After dissolution, a small group of members (namely Doctors Smith, Ogston, Fraser and Davidson) formed a new Medical Club, which, though smaller than its predecessor, continued to meet under the same principles for some years. In February 1875 the possibility of extending club membership was considered.
