Administrative / Biographical History

Larry J Smith was appointed National Officer of the Passenger Services National Trade Group of the Transport and General Workers' Union in 1965 and National Secretary of the group in 1970. He was appointed the union's Executive Officer, effectively third-in-command, in 1979 and an Assistant General Secretary in the late 1980s. He stood for election as General Secretary in 1968, in a contest won by Jack Jones, and again in 1977, coming fourth in a contest won by Moss Evans. He was elected to the TUC General Council in 1980 and later became chairman of the Transport Industries Committee. Smith also stood for the post of T&G Deputy General Secretary in 1985, but was beaten by Bill Morris by 20 votes to 17.
