Scope and Content

Collection of books, journals, maps and yearbooks.
It includes historical and current publications by the Scottish Mountaineering Club and Scottish Mountaineering Trust along with a vast library of books on: technical and philosophical aspects of mountaineering, climbing, skiing, hill walking and other outdoor pursuits; fiction and literature; biographies and autobiographies; travel and exploration from all over the world which includes an extensive collection of Scottish texts; history of mountaineering; antiquarian collection of 18th century Scottish travel and tour books.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Scottish Mountaineering Club was formed in Glasgow in 1889, as a result of correspondence in the Glasgow Herald initiated by William W. Naismith.

Arrangement

The existing arrangement of the books has been retained as closely as possible by subject or geographical area. The journals are arranged in alphabetical order. The SMC guidebooks are arranged chronologically, other guidebooks are arranged geographically.

Acquisition Information

The collection was transferred to the University of Strathclyde in 2008 and is held on deposit from the Scottish Mountaineering Club.
