Administrative / Biographical History

Hubert H. Lamb (1913-1997) obtained his Master's degree from Trinity College, Cambridge in natural sciences and geography. He worked at the British and Irish Meteorological Offices from 1945 until 1971. He was the Founding Director of the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia (1972-1977) and was awarded an honorary doctorate (D.Sc.) from UEA in 1981.

Arrangement

The early deposit (LAMB/1) occupies 8 linear metres and comprises 31 boxes. Re-arrangement has taken place covers. The content is organised according to 42 subject areas. The subject areas are similar to those used by Lamb in the index lists he created to organise his reprint collection.

The later deposit (LAMB/2) occupies 14 linear metres and comprises boxes, box-files and firm folders. No sorting or re-arrangement of LAMB/2 has taken place. The listing reflects the labels on the boxes or folders as kept by Lamb. There also exists two copies of an accompanying index compiled by Lamb (in red and blue ring-binders) to the printed reports, articles and reprints. There are over 80 lists, each with a separate subject theme.

Access Information

Other than where a specific access restriction is noted, the collection is open for consultation in the Archives Department during its advertised opening hours.
