Scorpion Manuscripts

Miscellaneous manuscripts consisting of :

Letters, written to and from Scorpion. They include a variety of correspondents. Also, some letters relating to Scorpion written to W. R. Owen.

Notes on lectures held at Brecon Memorial College on such subjects as Mental Philosophy, Physical Science, Biblical Criticism and Theology, 1843-1846, as well as other material relating to Scorpion's time at the College.

Miscellaneous notebooks containing information on Caledfryn, the beginnings of a biography (not in Scorpion's hand), notes on sermons, a script by Scorpion on the effect of the Welsh press on the nation.

Also, an account book of Llanrwst Congregational Chapel, 1852-1860, with detailed lists of collections and payments made to preachers.

Thomas Roberts was also known by his pseudonym, Scorpion. He was born in 1816 in Denbigh and attended the school of Michael Jones in Llanuwchllyn before becoming a student at Brecon Memorial College.

As a congregational minister, he served at Llanuwchllyn, Merioneth and later moved to Newmarket, Flintshire in 1856 and then Llanrwst, Denbighshire in 1858. He was one of the great writers of his day, contributing articles to Y Dysgedydd and Yr Haul. He died in 1887.

Items 987 - 988 and 1000 were presented by the widow of Mr W. R. Owen of Deganwy in 1932. Items 989 - 999 were presented by Miss Roberts of Llanrwst in 1906.
