George Canning was educated at Eton and Oxford, and entered Lincoln's Inn in  1791 . He was elected MP for Newport in 1794, and for Wendover in 1797, and was soon appointed to office, including being a member of the India Board (1799-1800 ) and being paymaster-general (1800-1801 ). After a period out of office, he became treasurer of the Navy (1804-1806 ), and foreign secretary (1807-1809 ), but resigned the latter office after fighting a duel with  Viscount Castlereagh (1769-1822 ). He was MP for Liverpool, (1812-1822 ), and returned to government as president of the India Board  1816-1821  . After becoming MP for Harwich in  1822  he was again appointed foreign secretary, in the administration of Lord Liverpool (1770-1828 ). On the latter's resignation because of serious ill-health, Canning was appointed prime minister and chancellor of the exchequer (April  1827 ), but he died on 08 August  1827 .
