John Hain (b. 1899 in Edinburgh) was brought up in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. As a Private, Royal Irish Fusiliers, he served on the Western Front from Feb. 1918. He was captured whilst blinded and had an eye removed in a German hospital at Ghent before being held as a POW (Prisoner of War) at Solta.
