Papers and correspondence of Sir Wilfrid Edward Le Gros Clark, 1895-1971

Scope and Content

Very little manuscript material remains from Clark's long career in anatomy. There are personal diaries, 1937-1971, journals of journeys abroad, some personal correspondence, and a few drafts for publications. There is also a little material relating to Clark's brother Cyril, Chief Secretary of British North Borneo, who was held prisoner during the Second World War and killed by the Japanese in 1945.

Administrative / Biographical History

Clark was born in Hemel Hempstead and educated at Blundell's School, Tiverton and St Thomas's Medical School, London where he qualified M.R.C.S. in 1916. He then joined the Royal Army Medical Corps, serving in France from the beginning of 1918. After demobilisation in 1919 he was appointed Principal Medical Officer, Sarawak, Borneo, 1920-1923. Returning to Britain he was successively Reader in Anatomy, London University, 1924-1927, Professor of Anatomy, St Bartholomew's Hospital, London, 1927-1929, Professor of Anatomy, St Thomas's Hospital, London, 1929-1934 and Professor of Anatomy, Oxford University, 1934-1962. He served as President of the International Anatomical Congress in 1950, President of the Anatomical Society in 1952 and President of the British Association for the Advancement of Science in 1961. His research interests included comparative primate anatomy, neuroanatomical studies and primate phylogeny. He was elected FRS in 1935 (Ferrier Lecture 1956, Royal Medal 1961) and knighted in 1955.
