Scope and Content

Papers of the Heber family, mainly correspondence of Reginald Heber and of his sons, Richard and Reginald. The collection also includes:  

  • Notes and verse by Reginald Heber
  • Correspondence, 1793-1832, verse, 1768-75, and a journal, 1786, of Mary, second wife of Reginald Heber
  • Lists and catalogues of books, and bibliographical notes made by Richard Heber
  • School exercise books of Richard Heber
  • Thirteen diaries, 1786-1790-8, 1800, 1804, 1829, and a journal, 1796, of Richard Heber
  • Antiquarian and genealogical notes by T.C. Heber

Administrative / Biographical History

The Heber family included Reginald Heber (1728-1804), fellow and tutor of Brasenose College, Oxford, and his sons Richard (1773-1833), MP, book collector and classical scholar, and Reginald (1783-1826), Bishop of Calcutta. Details of the two sons are given in the Dictionary of National Biography.
