Administrative / Biographical History

The parish of Beddgelert, in Caernarfonshire, north Wales was a civil as well as an ecclesiastical administrative unit. This parish, represented by a selection of members known as the vestry had responsibility for poor relief, maintenance of highways, law and order and collection of revenue in the form of rates from property holders in the parish, which continued until late nineteenth century reforms in local government. In 1894 parish government was reconstructed which left vestries with limited powers such as the election of churchwardens and administration of charities.
