Administrative / Biographical History

The Northumberland & Durham Trustee Savings Bank emerged in 1971 following a merger between the Newcastle-Upon-Tyne and South Shields Savings Banks. The Newcastle Savings Bank was opened on 10 January 1818. The bank's first premises were situated in Merchant's Court. The savings bank proved so successful that it was necessary for the bank to move into larger premises. Following several moves over the course of the 1820s the bank finally moved into a purpose built premises in the Royal Arcade, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne in June 1833.
